Matraville Sports High School has 7 classes for students with special needs. The Inclusive Learning Centre has 2 classes for students with a mild intellectual disability and 2 for students with a moderate/severe intellectual disability. The Support Unit has 3 classes for students who have Autism as their primary disability. These special classes give extra support to students who have been assessed as needing it because they have disabilities or issues which would make it difficult for them to follow a mainstream curriculum and/or participate in a mainstream class. This extra support can include lower class numbers, extra funding, extra staff, special classes, specialist support staff and consultants, etc. All students have the option to access either the mainstream curriculum or Life Skills outcomes. They participate in all aspects of school activities and integrate as much or as little as they would like.
What’s happening in the Inclusive Learning Centre?
Our greatest concern during the Coronavirus pandemic is the health and safety of our students and staff. In keeping with current advice we have decided to limit who comes into our school in order to support infection control.
For that reason we are suspending therapists coming into our school for at least this term. We are taking advice from the Department of Education and Department of Health and will keep you updated as more information comes to light.
We are also cancelling our provider’s morning tea that was scheduled for March 26. We are aiming to have this event as soon as it is safe to do so.
From here on, ITP’s will be conducted by phone conferencing. Your child’s teacher will contact you regarding a mutually convenient time for this.
Please if you child has a runny nose, cough or ill in any way do not send him/her to school. Many of our special needs students do not practise correct hygiene and germs spread very easily to other students and staff. Practice social distancing with your child and appropriate handwashing procedures. This supports routines we do at school and limits any spread of the virus.
The latest news on TAFE is that classes are continuing as usual. Those students accessing an E-VET course are encouraged to continue their studies whilst they are not attending school.
For those students who are not at school, you are expected to complete the work set for you on COMPASS or via booklets. Failure to do so will affect your final mark and possibly your RoSA and HSC. Your work needs to come back to the class teacher for marking weekly.
