The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.
The syllabus consists of the following strands:
- number and algebra
- measurement and geometry
- statistics and probability.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:
- Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
- Mathematics Extension 1
- Mathematics Advanced
- Mathematics Standard 2
- Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
- Mathematics Life Skills.
Mathematics – Learning From Home
In response to the unfolding COVID 19 situation, the Mathematics faculty has set up an online learning platform using Compass, as the main reference point.
Each day students are to log into their COMPASS account.
All Stages/Years
COMPASS
· Sign into your Compass student portal account via:

· Select your Science class for that day and review the lesson plan and notes set by your classroom teacher
· Complete the lesson by following the instructions set in the lesson plan
· Click on links to access online learning resources (e.g. worksheets, Education Perfect etc.)
· Access any current assessment task(s) and have a clear understanding of the task along with submission instructions
· Contact your classroom teacher via COMPASS if you have any questions related to classwork or assessment
· Textbooks (pdf versions) can be downloaded from the ‘Resources’ tab of each class in Compass.

Education Perfect is an online learning platform that Matraville Sports High School has integrated into its curriculum.
It enables student to focus on learning at home, providing structured lessons suitable for both the classroom and individual learning.
These lessons start with introductory slides, which gives students a good understanding of the topic. Rich images and videos breakdown difficult concepts to provide a thorough understanding of the topic. Teachers through the platform monitor students’ progress, and feedback is provided.

Mathspace is an all-in-one learning resource, which Matraville Sports High School has integrated into its Mathematics program for a number of years.
As an online learning tool, the platform combines video lessons, textbooks and adaptive practice; it encourages students to become self-directed learners.

NESA is the New South Wales Education Standards Authority and their website will allow you to access important documents related to curriculum. The link here provides the K-10 syllabus as well as course performance descriptors related to assessment in Science.

Atomi is an online teaching and learning platform for students, teachers and schools. This resource is used here at Matraville to provide short video lessons, interactive quizzes and smart revision tools. This resource is available for the Year 11 and 12 Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Passwords are provided by your teacher who you can email directly to retrieve.

The Jacaranda Active Outcomes Stage 4 and 5 textbook along with the Learn On online platform is another resource used. The resource provides essential questions, workbooks, homework books, weblinks and interactivities that are all accessible via Compass or the JacPlus website. Upon viewing your lesson plan on Compass, resources from Jacaranda will be attached and or/ links to other resources provided.
