In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.
Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
The study of a language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school year from Year 7 to Year 10, but preferably in Years 7 or 8.
In Years 11 and 12, NSW schools offer a wide variety of languages, catering for beginning students to background speakers.
Learning from home during the COVID-19 crisis
The Languages faculty is providing work for all of our students during this period. Teachers are uploading daily lessons for students to follow via Compass to continue to deliver high quality learning activities that align with the syllabus.
Students and their parents/caregivers have access to these lessons via the Compass portal and students should be logging in daily to view their learning tasks. Assessment tasks will also appear on Compass and students will need to complete these by the due date and submit their work electronically.
Teachers will communicate to their classes via Compass and their Google Classrooms including providing feedback on student work.
If additional work is required, the Languages faculty directs you to the following resources:
- Education Perfect https://www.educationperfect.com/app/#/
This site provides students with online learning in all curriculum areas for students to revise skills and content.
- The Department of Education Learning From Home page
This site provides additional units of work for students to access if extension work is required.
- National Education Standards Authority (NESA)
