Matraville High School was officially opened on the 27th September 1963, and named after James Mario Matra, a sailor and diplomat.
In recognition of the school's excellence in the sporting arena, in December 2001, Matraville High was
re-established as a specialist sports high, thus becoming "Matraville Sports High School".
Matraville Sports High School has developed some of the greatest sporting stars such as the Ella siblings, Josh Addo-car, Russell Fairfax, Sean Garlick, David Knox, Adam Reynolds, James Tamou and Eddie Jones. Among many successful females graduates are Akira Kelly, Helen Fonokalafi and Monicqa Mo'ale. A full list of alumni are listed on display in the school office.
